Where Newcomers Meet New Friends

MEMBERS' COMMENTS

I had lived in the Minneapolis area almost four years, and really hadn't developed any close friendships.  Then I discovered Newcomers!  What a fun group of women with varied backgrounds!  I felt welcome right from the first coffee I attended.  There are a wide variety of activities to choose from that would fit into anyone's schedule.  In just a few months I've developed many friendships and have had lots of fun along the way.  I'm so happy to have joined this caring and fun group.

I was encouraged to join Newcomers by two members I know.  They both told me about this very welcoming group of people with fun and interesting social activities.  I wholeheartedly agree with them after being in Newcomers for just six months.  I also appreciate the importance the group places on supporting local charitable organizations in the Southwest Suburban Twin Cities area.  The group has recently spent many hours to help raise funds for Meals on Wheels and PROP (People Reaching Out to Other People).

So far, I have participated in Bunco, the Walking Group, Happy Hour, Luncheons, Chick Flicks, and special events such as a baby shower for one of the members.  It is easy to join each group.  Depending on my volunteer schedule, I would also be interested in the Knitting Group, The Coffees, Gardening, and the Wednesday outings with Lynne who visits places of interest in and around the area. As you can see, there are a variety of activities to consider.  With so many activities, I have made friends with many women who have moved here from all over the United States.

I
moved here two years ago from Michigan.  With two adult daughters living overseas and recently retired, I found the SW Newcomers Club to be a life-saver!  Everyone welcomed me with open arms to the many activities I joined:  Book Club, Mah-Jongg, Monthly Luncheons, Dine-In and Chick Flicks.  These women know what it's like to be new to an area and the feelings of being lost and lonely.  Join Newcomers and you'll join an instant network of friends and fun.

Southwest Newcomers has been a life preserver for me.  On the Sunday prior to Memorial Day in 2003, my husband and I arrived at our rental townhouse in Bloomington, MN in time for Jeff to report to his new position on Tuesday.  We had moved from West Hartford, CT and didn't know a soul in the area.  Sunday afternoon found me relaxing with the Star Tribune where I
found an article about SW Newcomers.  I had never heard of Newcomers but here was a group of women offering me a chance to join them for a tour in downtown Minneapolis.  I immediately called the number and was warmly welcomed by one of the members.

The rest is a wonderful history of meeting women in my age range who totally understand how it feels to be the new person in a new city/town/state.  One of the many wonderful things about SW Newcomers is that we don't have to drop out of membership after we have been in the group for a certain period of time so the friendships continue with the opportunity to continually meet newer people and warmly welcome them.
